Two exceptional eighth-grade musicians from Lorbeer Middle School, Matthew Raphael De Luna (Upright Bass) and John “Kiko” Koloa (Viola), have been selected to perform with the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) Honor Middle School String Orchestra, a highly selective regional honor ensemble comprised of the top middle school string players from across Southern California.
Selection into the SCSBOA Honor Orchestra follows a rigorous audition process and requires mastery of exceptionally challenging repertoire. Matthew and Kiko distinguished themselves among a competitive pool of applicants, demonstrating advanced musicianship, technical skill, and musical maturity.
This achievement is especially noteworthy as neither student receives private music instruction. Their acceptance reflects the strength of school-based music education, consistent personal practice, and a strong commitment to artistic excellence.
The students’ success also highlights the impactful instruction of their teacher, Monserrat Lujano, whose dedication and mentorship have played a critical role in their musical development. This recognition underscores the high-quality teaching and learning taking place daily in Lorbeer Middle School’s music program.
Matthew and Kiko will perform with the SCSBOA Honor Middle School String Orchestra on Friday, January 31, at 7:00 PM at the Riverside Convention Center. The concert is part of SCSBOA’s annual honor ensemble performances and is open to the public. The event is widely attended by educators, families, and members of the regional music community.
